Baccarat: aim for the hand closest to 9
The goal in Baccarat is simple: bet on the hand you think will be closest to 9 — the Player or the Banker — or take a Tie bet. The game uses an 8-deck shoe and cards are valued as follows: 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are worth 0; Aces are worth 1; all other cards are worth their face value. If a hand totals 10 or more, subtract 10 and the remainder is the hand’s value (mod 10).
- How a round plays — Both the Player and Banker receive two cards. If either hand totals 8 or 9 (a natural), no more cards are dealt and the higher total wins. If there is a tie, Tie bets win; otherwise, normal bets push back.
- Third-card rules — If no natural occurs, the Player’s third card is drawn based on the Player’s first two cards; the Banker’s third card follows a separate table depending on both hands and the Player’s third card.

If the Dealer shows a Blackjack, the round ends unless you also have a Blackjack, which is a push.
- Your actions — After placing your bet and receiving two cards, you can: Hit (take another card), Stand (end your turn), Split (divide a paired hand into two hands, up to three splits per round), Double Down (double your wager for one final card), or Insurance (a side bet when the dealer shows an Ace, paying 2:1 if the dealer has Blackjack).
- Dealer rules — The Dealer checks for Blackjack and will hit on a soft 17. If the Dealer busts, you win. If you and the Dealer tie, it’s a Push and your original wager is returned.
- Split and double-down specifics — Splitting two Aces creates two hands with one card each; you may Split up to 3 times (4 hands total). Aces split cannot be re-split. Doubling down after a Split is allowed. If the Dealer has Blackjack after a split or double, that round outcome may affect losses.
